My Informative Speech Text.

Assalamualaikum and hello, everyone. My name is Syafiqa Durrani. Before I start delivering my speech, I would like to tell you a little story. When I was ten, my father bought me a novel. I liked that novel so much I could not stop reading it. That novel was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I am here not to talk about the novel, but to talk about the author who happens to be my idol as well. Joanne Rowling is a British author who writes under the name JK Rowling. She was born on July 31st, 1965 to Peter James Rowling and Anne Rowling. She has a younger sister named Dianne Rowling. When she was younger, she has always been interested in writing fantasy stories. During her childhood, she used to narrate stories to her younger sister. The first story she ever written was about a rabbit, which gets a disease and has different friends visiting it.

You must be wondering where the name “JK Rowling” came from. Let me tell you about it. Her first Harry Potter book was written under the name “Joanne Rowling”, but the publisher, Bloomsbury requested her to use her initials rather than disclosing her first name. The publisher was afraid that young boys might not want to buy books written by a female author. She had no middle name, and so she derived the letter ‘K’ from her grandmother, Kathleen. That was how the name JK Rowling was born.

I want to share a little facts about JK Rowling with all of you. In 1990, the idea of Harry Potter came into her mind when she was on a train from Manchester to London. She began writing upon reaching her destination. The business magazine, “Forbes” has named her as the first person to become a US-dollar billionaire by just writing books. According to Forbes ranking, she is the 48th most powerful celebrity of 2007. “The Sunday Times Rich List” listed her as the 12th richest woman in Britain in 2008. After all the achievement, she is still as humble as ever.

Let’s move on to the next one. Harry Potter... It is the most famous novel series in the history of mankind. It has attracted millions of readers from across the globe. It is the thing that brought JK Rowling to major stardom. The seventh book, The Deathly Hallows was the fastest-selling book of all time. it sold 11 million copies in the first day of release in the UK and US. Harry Potter is a global brand worth an estimated $15 billion. The last four Harry Potter books have consecutively set record as the fastest-selling books in history. The series, totalling 4195 pages, have been translated into 65 languages. Impressive, isn’t it?

Now’s that Harry Potter is officially over, you must be wondering what’s next for Harry Potter. Will it just ‘die’ like that, buried deep inside, become a history? Well, the answer is no. There is life after Harry Potter. JK Rowling has made it possible by introducing Pottermore. Pottermore is a website created by JK Rowling herself and sponsored by Sony. The site will sell e-books and audio book versions of the Harry Potter series. The registration for the limited beta released began on 31 July 2011 for the first 1 million fans. It will open to everyone else in October. With Pottermore, users are able to participate in interactive reading experiences or ‘moments’ beginning with the first book. Among other things, Pottermore allows you to visit Diagon Alley, be sorted into houses, learn spells, create potions and compete with student from different houses for the House Cup. So basically, Pottermore is the virtual world of Harry Potter. It will at least let you experience some of the fun of living in the world of Harry Potter.

In conclusion, JK Rowling is today’s most famous and successful author. She is a woman who became rich by just writing books. She is a woman who deserved to be idolised by anyone, especially to those whose dream to become a writer. She is inspirational. I dream to be like her., to be as successful as she is now. And Harry Potter will always be in my heart, it will always be a part of who I am today. Harry Potter will never be gone, not as long as those remain, are loyal to it. And lastly, whether you come back by page or by film, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.

Thank you.
